Final exams are coming up soon and it’s an inevitable hurdle that students will have to clear before they can enjoy the holidays. For those of us who need a little help on staying focused while studying, here are a few general tips to go by:

Break it down

Frankly, it is exhausting to study for hours at a time. Divide your study schedule by topics and take breaks in between to let the information soak in. Set an alarm for the amount of time you want to study for so you can relax and switch gears if you need to. Studying for finals is stressful, but you’ll feel more ready to get on that grind if you know when and what to study.

Location is key

Find somewhere comfortable and accessible to study (not your bed). Make sure that there is enough space for you to spread out and that it is quiet enough for you to concentrate. Bunker down at your desk in your Kapi apartment or head down to your school library to find a study nook you can get comfy in!

Two is better than one

It’s always fun to study with friends, but if your friends are too fun, you’re probably better off studying on your own. Group study sessions are good places for peer reviews and quizzing each other on class materials, but try to avoid studying for important exams in large groups. If you want the company though, find a study buddy to compare notes with. They’ll keep you on task and remind you to take a breather when you need it. Of course, it’s nice to return the favor!

Enjoy the little things

But save the Netflix binge for later. It’s important to take a breather so you can recharge, but you’ll want to be able to bounce back once you’re able to. Go out for a walk, get up and stretch, or go on a food run with friends. Whatever you do, make sure you keep your morale up so studying doesn’t feel entirely like a chore.

“Google it!”

Maybe you didn’t hear the professor correctly. Perhaps the professor didn’t cover a certain topic enough or your book doesn’t mention it at all. Whatever the case, Google is your best friend. Also, try Youtube! It’s great for understanding how to do problems, reviewing the lecture material, and offering new perspectives on solving problems! There’s a video tutorial available for practically everything on Youtube and it’s all accessible through the internet!

Sleep is important too

Maybe re-think about going through with your next all-nighter. It’s important that you understand the materials covered in class, but it’s also important that you feel like a (well-rested) human when you go take your final, so make sure you set aside enough time to get some sleep.

Final exams are stressful, but take care of yourself. If you start to feel that it’s becoming too much, try to adjust your perspective and remind yourself what the end goal is for your studying. It’ll be worth it in the end when you walk out feeling good about your exam. Good luck and happy studying!
