5 Tips For A Good Roommate Experience

It’s not all fun and games when you’re living with people! There are going to be some moments where you want to flip a table because someone is getting on your nerves. That’s fine! You’re a person, not a robot! If you think something is going to be a problem early on, it’s best if you and your roommate talk about it before it becomes a mess.

Tip for Roommates

Expect Noise 📣

There are going to be some times where you’re trying to get some peace and quiet and someone else is out there in the living room living it up with their Netflix stream or with some friends over. Or you might be the one who wakes up earlier than the rest and there’s no real way you can quiet down your morning routine so you don’t wake up the rest of your apartment. If tensions rise over noise levels, make sure to bring it up and talk it over! Don’t let it stew because then it’ll just bad times later on for everyone involved.

Respect Boundaries

College is all about meeting new people with different personalities! If it turns out that you’re living with someone who’s not exactly on the same page as you, don’t let your first reaction be something negative like resentment or seething rage (some people get like that tho, so it’s probably best if you give them their space first). Don’t be that person who oversteps their boundaries and pushes their roommates out of their comfort zone too often. Remember, you’re all sharing the same living space. And if you find that you’re the person who’s getting pushed around, it’s definitely ok to stand up for yourself and call the other person out on it!

Chores 🗑️

Often, one of the main sources of tension with living with other people is the division of chores. Yes, you’ll all be busy! You have classes to study for, jobs to work at, a personal life to live, etc . . . but if your main contribution to maintaining the household is doing your own dishes and putting them away, you might need to do some more. Don’t let just one person do all the work! Talk to your roommates and make a to-do list. Who’s going to take out the trash? Who’s gonna keep the kitchen clean? If it’s too much work for one person, it’s probably a good thing to ask if someone to help out.

Personal Belongings

The short answer is ‘if it doesn’t belong to you, you should probably ask permission to use it’. If your roommate says it’s alright to use something like a vacuum cleaner or a blender without having to always ask, then go on ahead (just take care of their thing and clean it if it gets dirty after use). If it’s something more personal like shampoo or a laptop computer, don’t just automatically assume that your roommate will be alright with you borrowing it. Even if you’re fine with the idea of your roommate borrowing your things for short term use, it doesn’t mean the reverse is the same. Ask first.

Actually Living Together

One of the perks of living with other people is being able to enjoy their company and do things together! It’s the little things like saying ‘have a good day’ before they go out the door or ‘do you wanna get some 2am pancakes, fam?’ that make you appreciate the apartment life more. Don’t be shy! But don’t get all up in their face either. If your roommate rainchecks you or is more on the quiet side, don’t take it personally if they can’t go out with you or talk to you all the time!  Conversely, if you want to be more involved with your roommates, but you don’t make an effort to get to know them, don’t get offended when they don’t invite you out or ignore you. Your roommate isn’t purposely trying to be a ‘bad roommate’. They’re people, just like you. If you want to change something in your dynamic, don’t be scared to step up and say something.

Be kind and support each other! You’re all living in the same apartment, so make the best of it and hype each other up. For better or worse, you’ll be together, so don’t be a stranger and have fun!

How To: Get Ready To Go Back To School

It’s almost time to head back to school. Much sadness. Such tired. Just Kidding! It’s time to put on our learning hats and get that education! Are you ready?! Let’s make this year the best ever!

Get Your Desk In Order

It’s a good time to take advantage of the back to school sales that are happening right now. Things like notebooks and pencils  to laptop computers and external hard drives are usually marked down for the influx of students going back to school. If you need something that’s usually pricy or you just want to stock up on stationary, now would probably be a good time to go out there and get what you need.

Textbooks

If you remember which classes you’re taking in the fall, look them up and see which books your professors are requiring for their classes. You don’t need to buy them yet, but it would be a good idea to see if you can find any used or affordable rentals and bookmark the links ahead of time. Of course, if a kind soul posted the pdfs online, go ahead and bookmark them. When your first day starts, you’ll feel good knowing that you already prepared ahead for your classes.

Freshen Up Your Wardrobe

No lie, but showing up in a new outfit on the first day is a mood. Sure, maybe no one else can tell you’re sporting some new kicks or a cute new top (unless you tell them or scream it from the rooftops), but you’ll have that satisfaction of knowing how fresh you look on your first day of school. So treat yourself a little and get that new thing for yourself. And if you have any old clothes (maybe they don’t fit you or they’re just a little outdated), donate them!

Organize Your Music

This might not seem related to school, but make some playlists for yourself if you’re the type to jam out during the day! Need some music for when you’re on that study grind? Make a lofi or instrumental playlist for yourself to get you through some trying time! Late night food run? Stuck in traffic? Or when you want some background music while you’re walking through campus? There’s a playlist out there for that!

Fix your sleeping schedule

Year after year, students always complain of the lag they feel when they’re suddenly forced to switch back to their academic routine. No one is having a good time when they’re suddenly shutting down at 1 PM during a lecture because they stayed up too late on IG or playing MMOs with friends. If you can, try to sleep an hour earlier or just at a reasonable time. It might cramp on your style a bit, but at least you’ll won’t feel as tired as your fellow peers on your first day. 😂

You don’t have to do everything at once! Plan things out one step at a time. But don’t worry too much! Just go at your own pace and do your own thing!

5 Exercise Tips Every Student Should Know

Finding time to go to the gym regularly is pretty hard. It can be even more difficult if you just don’t feel like it or don’t know how to work out properly. Here are some tips for you if you wanna try going to the gym more!

Kapi Residences

Start Off Small

Listen, if the last time you worked out was because you had to take the stairs instead of the elevator, there’s probably no chance of you turning up to the gym and starting off on the biggest, scariest looking machine in the room (unless you’re wild like that). Instead of potentially hurting yourself, try some basic workout routines like squats (with weights) or lunges and work your way up.

Take Advantage of Available Gyms

Each Kapi apartment community has its own gym for its residents to use! Bring your jams, your water, and a light snack! As a student, you probably have a free gym membership to your school gym as well, so don’t let that go to waste! Try to work in an hour at the gym if you can (maybe in your down time or after classes) and see how you feel about it!

Daily Reminders

Do yourself little favors to remind you to keep it up! Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to get up and work out if you need a break from a hard study grind. Pack your gym clothes and some water along with your things for the next day. Prepare that post-workout snack to keep you motivated! Once you get the hang of it, it’ll be a good addition to your daily routine!

Have A Witness

You probably heard that working out or going to the gym with a friend will motivate you to work out more, so try it! See who’s free and head on down to the gym together! Have fun while you’re keeping in shape!

Step by Step

It can be kinda scary going to the gym, especially if you have no idea what you’re doing. That’s ok though. If you got other ways to keep in shape, like walking or riding a bike to
classes, that’s great! Just go at your own pace and see what works best for you!

If you’re just starting, no worries! Everyone has to come up from somewhere! Look up some online guides or ask a friend who’s a gym nut for some tips! You can do it!

4 Simple Ways to De-Clutter

Can’t find that one pen on your pencil case? Do you keep losing things in the trunk of your car? No worries! Put these tips to use and free up some space for yourself and your things!

Pixabay.com

Pixabay.com

Loose Change?

If it seems that you’re finding loose change everywhere in your car, bedroom, living space, etc, now is probably the time to invest in a little bank container or a small tin of mints. Place a piggy bank (tbh there’s a lot of cute money containers you can choose from) on your desk or drawer and make a habit of putting the loose change you find in them. It’ll rack up really fast! If you happen to find a lot of loose change in your car, put it in an empty mint tin and keep that stored in your storage compartment! It’ll keep your car nice and tidy and you’ll know where your loose change is when you need it!

For Your Drawers

Make life easier with a drawer organizer that keeps your socks, shirts, and etc organize. You won’t have to sift through a pile of clothes to find that one thing anymore. Just roll up your

garments and organize by color, brand, etc!

Junk In The Trunk?

If your car doesn’t have a built in trunk organizer or an storage net, that’s fine! You can get one yourself for pretty cheap and it’ll keep your stuff in one place when you come back from a heavy round of grocery shopping (or any kind of shopping really). For those of you who really don’t want to spend anything, a big ol’ box (like the kind you get from Costco) will do just fine!

For Your Shower and Bathroom

Got tons and tons of bottles and soaps cluttering your bathtub and sink? Do they leave gross residue and marks on your bathtub and sink after a while? If so, you should get a hanging shower caddy/shelf organizer for all your shampoos, conditioners, body wash, lotions and etc. Not only will it make your bathroom easier to clean, but you won’t have to deal with wrangling up your soaps and lotions anymore! Not tripping over your soaps will make your self-care routine a lot easier!

The little differences from having a tidier space will make life a bit more easier for you! But there’s nothing wrong with having a space that’s more lived in if it that’s what makes life easier! Each to their own, right?

How To: Keep A Plant Alive At Your College Housing

If you want something green in your apartment, but you’re not sure what you want or what you’re capable of taking care of, no worries! Here’s a handy guide to getting a leafy friend for your Kapi apartment!

Pixabay.com

Pixabay.com

How much light do you get?

Most plants species you find at the market or gardening center require some kind of natural light to grow, so it’s not realistic for you to expect even a low maintenance plant to grow in a dark room. If you have a space with decent lighting (you keep open your blinds/curtains during the day), you can provide a nice, cool area for a pretty snake plant (decent growth) or rubber plant (can get tall). If you get more than the normal of amount of lighting in your apartment or you just want to grow something on your terrace, you can get a succulent/cactus or chinese money plant if you want something small, or an umbrella plant (if you want something a little bigger).

What fits your aesthetic?

If you picked out plants for your apartment before, chances are that you picked them out because they fit with your decor scheme. Unfortunately, that cute little succulent you got from the supermarket didn’t do so well in a space with minimal lighting. That’s alright though! There are dozens of plants out there that will fit your style. Want something beachy, but doesn’t need direct sunlight? Why not get a small areca palm plant? How about a classic boston fern or spider plant? They’re cute and easy to take care of! You can look online for dozen of other suitable apartment plants that will look good in your Kapi Apartment!

It’s a little dark, but I still want a plant!

Succulents are, unfortunately, not an option if you want to keep a plant in a shadier space. A lot of people think that because they are low maintenance, you can water them at least once a week and they’ll be fine, which is true. They just need a lot of sunlight to grow. So if you have a shady space and want to put a leafy friend there, why not get a ZZ (Zanzibar) plant that can tolerate low light and is super easy to care for! If you want something more luscious and leafy, get a pothos plant or a cast iron! They’re also super easy to care for and will brighten up your place!

Extra tips for maintaining a houseplant:

  • If plant leaves have burnt tips: move it out of the direct sunlight
  • If plant leaves are getting thin or losing their color: give it some more water
  • If plant growth has stagnated: give it more light
  • If plant collapses when soil is moist: give it less water

Take care of your leafy buddy! They’ll do their own thing, but when they need it, a little extra love from you can go a long way!  You can also split plant responsibilities with your roommates and make it easier!

How To: Be Environmentally Friendly On A Student Budget

If you’re becoming aware of how your living habits have an effect on the environment and you want to do something about it, cool! Here are some small changes you can make to your daily routine to become more environment-friendly!

environmentally friendly

Invest in a water bottle or water filter

Instead of buying plastic water bottles and recycling them after one use, why not invest in a stainless-steel water bottle or a Brita filter? Not only is it more cost-efficient (you don’t have to keep buying crates of water), but it’s a lot better for the environment and a good source of clean water for yourself. You can find Brita filters (or similar brands) at almost any department store. Just make sure that if you’re also buying a metal water bottle that you check what it’s made of. Stainless-steel is the way to go. It’s easier to clean and unlike aluminum, it lasts longer and cause any health problems down the line.

Use Less Paper

In this day and age, your computer is your go-to for everything. News, homework, instant communication, it’s all at your fingertips. That’s why if you can help it, try not to rely on paper products that often. But if you need your handwritten notes, that’s alright too. Just make sure you recycle the paper that you’re done with. According to a study, 40% of municipal waste is paper and paper products, so recycle your paper. It saves trees and legit, it takes less effort and resources to make paper from recycled materials than from scratch.

Invest In A Canvas Grocery Bag (if you haven’t yet)

With California banning plastic single-use bags in stores, almost everyone has found some other way to carry their groceries. People have repurposed cardboard boxes, containers, etc, but the most efficient way to contain your groceries is to just get a canvas bag. You don’t need to keep paying 10 cents for a bag every time you go grocery shopping when you have a canvas tote you can keep reusing!

Unplug Your Appliances

Just because your appliances are off doesn’t mean that they’re not using energy. If you have something that you don’t use often (a blender, toaster, etc), but keep plugged into your outlet, it’s going to consume energy. So for the sake of the environment, unplug the appliances that you don’t use often.

Eat Less Meat and Dairy Products

Believe it or not, but eating less meat is really great for the environment. This is not advising you to stop eating meat completely and if you are already vegetarian or vegan, that’s awesome!  But if everyone could just cut back a little, the amount of natural resources and land dedicated to raising livestock could, possibly and eventually, be reduced through less demand for meat and dairy products. There are plenty of delicious recipes that don’t use dairy or meat products. You just gotta look them up. Or consider substituting certain dairy products with non-dairy products and meats with seafood!

Shower Smart!

You’ve heard it before! Take shorter showers! No one is going to be there to shame you for your 20 minute showers, but on principle, if you take longer showers, you’re wasting more water and your utility bill will be higher on average. At the very least, turn off the water when you don’t need it, like when you’re lathering yourself. This also applies to if and when you leave the water on while you’re brushing your teeth. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to make changes to how you use your water, but you’ll see a big difference if you do!

You’re doing great! It may be difficult at first to make changes to your habits, but if you’ve taken some (or all of these) recommendations into consideration, you’ve already done the hardest part! It might not be much in your eyes, but a little bit of change can go a long way in helping out the environment, so keep it up! You got this!

3 Ways To Make This Summer Tastier

It’s super hot out, like ‘cook an egg out on the sidewalk because you can’ hot. So, what better way to cool off than with a nice glass of lemonade?

refreshing summer

Classic Homemade Lemonade

What can beat a simple glass of homemade lemonade?

Ingredients

12 Lemons (1lb of lemons = 4 lemons)

2 cups of water

1/2 cup of sugar

What to do?

  1. You don’t want grainy lemonade. Nothing spoils a fresh cup of lemonade like a pile undissolved sugar at the bottom. So warm up the water at medium heat and stir in the sugar. When you can’t see any sugar grains at the bottom anymore, you’re good.
  2. For this step, you have to put in some elbow grease and squeeze the juice out of the lemons yourself. Put a strainer over the mouth of the container you’re using to catch the pulp and seeds. Once you’re done, you’ll have some fresh lemon juice. We also recommend getting this $5 lemon press from Amazon to make things easier.
  3. Mix your sugar water and lemon juice together. Add more sugar water or lemon juice to adjust how sweet or tart you want your lemonade to me. Then, just pour over ice and serve.

Blackberry Mint Lemonade

Nothing will quench you better than this refreshing blend of sweetness and tartness.

Ingredients

2 cups of blackberries (fresh or frozen)

2 cups of water

1 cup of sugar

A handful of mint leaves (about 15-20)

2 quarts of store bought lemonade OR Classic Homemade Lemonade

What to do?

  1. Shred up your mint leaves
  2. Warm up the water at medium heat and mix in all your berries and (half or all) your shredded mint leaves. Stir.
  3. If you don’t like the idea of consuming the mint leaves, you can leave them unshredded and remove them whole once you’re done making What you want to do is to heat the berries and stir them until they become a syrupy puree.
  4. Blend the syrupy puree until it is smooth.
  5. Mix it with the lemonade. (For a nice ombre, lemonade first, then syrup).
  6. Serve.

Note: If you don’t like blackberries, you can legitimately replace the blackberries in this recipe with other berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc)

Virgin Raspberry Lemonade Mojito

You can get fancy here with this elegant, yet simple lemonade concoction!

Ingredients

A handful of mint leaves (15-20 leaves)

3 cup of water

½ cup of sparkling water

2 cup of sugar

2 oz of lime juice

1 cup of raspberries

1.5 cups of store bought lemonade OR Classic Homemade Lemonade

What to do?

  1. You are going to make a raspberry syrup using the first half of the Blackberry Mint Lemonade recipe (found above, but don’t add the mint leaves into the syrup mixture)
  2. Make 1 cup of simple syrup by heating up the water in a pan at medium heat and mixing in the sugar. It’s called simple syrup because it’s just a smooth mixture of water and sugar. It’s better than mixing sugar straight into your drink and having it clump at the bottom.
  3. Mix the mint leaves and ice in a tall glass. Use a blunt object to agitate the mint, so you can get more of the flavor once you pour the liquids in.
  4. Mix together your lemonade, sparkling water, lime juice, and 1-3 oz of the simple syrup. You can add more or less simple syrup if you need to adjust the flavor. Pour it in the glass with the your mint leaves and ice already mixed together.
  5. Add in your raspberry syrup.
  6. Garnish with some raspberries and a mint leaf.
  7. Serve.

Now, chill. Sit back and take a sip of some fresh lemonade. It’s refreshing and hopefully, you’ll be refreshed as well! Stay cool out there!

How To: Be Energy Efficient During Summer

It’s hot and sunny out and a lot of people have started turning on their electronics to cope with the heat. As you know, that might not be the best thing for the environment, so maybe try to keep cool without using your gadgets. 👍

Fresh Air Ventilation

Keep Your Place Nice And Breezy

It’s super simple! Open your window! Open all your windows! Let in that gentle breeze and have fresh air circulating through your Kapi apartment! You might not think that letting in a breeze or two will cool you down as much as turning on the A/C or pointing a fan at yourself, but try anyways. If it gets crazy hot in the afternoon and opening all your windows won’t do much, then go on ahead! Turn on your fans and A/C! But when it’s cooler, say like in the evening, you would probably appreciate a gentle breeze more than the oppressive cold of an A/C unit dialed down to 60 degrees.

Cold Air In

If you do turn on your A/C unit, make sure to have all your windows and doors shut to keep in the cold air. Otherwise, you’d just be wasting energy and pushing your A/C unit to its limits to compensate for the lack of cooling in your space.

Natural Light

Unless it’s necessary, you can choose not to turn on all your lights at night. The sun sets later in the day, so you have a good 3-4 hours to let in that natural light into your space. It might not be a lot, but it’ll make a difference in how you’re using your electricity. 👍👍

Drink Lots Of H2O

It may or may not be super hot yet, but it still warmer than what you’re probably used to. Drink more water and/or fluid! It’ll keep you hydrated and cool. And if you’re the type to get headaches because you’re dehydrated, that’s all the more reason you should drink more fluids!

Keep cool, homies! Don’t let the heat beat you! Being energy conscious is still a good way to creating good habits for yourself, so try it out!
